Pacific Islands v1.3: a Civilization 2 Scenario by Javier Arriaga (May 2001)
(WARNING: you must have "Fantastic Worlds" or higher Civilization 2 version)

To install this scenario, you must create a sub-directory called "pacific" in your "scenario" directory; unzip all files in this directory, execute "setsound.bat" and you'll be ready to play. Enjoy it!

This is the story of the American troops disembarking in a Pacific island military occupied by the Japanese. The island is completely fictitious, but it could be called Tarawa, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima... During the whole war, American troops disembarked in many islands like this.

When Douglas McArthur fled from Corregidor, the main US Base of the Philippines, he promised to return. When the North Americans braked the Japanese advance in the Coral Sea and stopped it definitively in Midway, the moment of complying the promise arrived.

He began to re-conquer the territory lost by the allies after the attack to Pearl Harbour with a system that revealed effective but very hard: to jump from each island to the next one. This way, the people knew names of islands that nobody had never heard... and they associated them to blood and death. Tarawa, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima... a whole generation would never forget it.

In this scenario, I've created a totally fictitious island; it is August 1943, and the US forces offensive is on its apogee. There is a heavily defended Japanese island at the southern flank of the front. The offensive won't be able to continue until the island is taken. General Douglas McArthur and Admiral Chester W. Nimitz have gathered an important Task Force and you are its commander.

You will command a fleet with 3 Battleships, 3 Carriers (if you lose them, there will be heart attacks in the admiralty) and many Cruisers and Destroyers; you have also a great contingent of US Marines. They shall be enough to invade the island, but the Japanese will fight for each inch of land.

This scenario is, as you see, planned for playing with the Americans, but of course you can also play with the Japanese.

Playing with the Americans, use your naval supremacy and your B-17 bombers to weaken their naval and aerial defences... but be careful with the kamikaze! Next, disembark your marines in the island and protect them with your fighters and anti-aerial artillery. Finally, conquer the enemy base and you will win. But you only have 50 turns to achieve it before McArthur and Nimitz get tired and destiny you to Alaska garrison, so don't fall asleep.

Playing with the Japanese, your orders are simple: Resist! Protect your ships with the aviation, use the kamikaze to sink their carriers and battleships. Sink their transport ships with your cruisers and destroyers. If they finally disembark, try to resist with your infantry (its quite good at defence) and hope the marines will be stopped by it. If you achieve to destroy the American Task Force... well, you can try to counterattack and disembark in the enemy base, but it surely won't be easy.

This is an objective-system scenario, with only two objectives: the US Base and the Japanese Base (value x2). The protagonists of the objectives are the Americans. If they get the objectives, they will have a decisive victory. If they are able to maintain their objective but they don't take the other one, they will have a marginal defeat (the advance will be stopped in this front). And if they finish without objectives... the General McArthur will have a serious problem (maybe he won't return to Corregidor).

The scenario is quite easy to win with both sides (the AI is rather pathetic), so please play in deity level.

The US Marines icon was taken from Harlan Thompson's WW2 units collection. Japan Infantery was created by Alex Mor. Coastal Artillery, Anti-aerial, Destroyer, Cruiser, Battleship, Carrier, Artillery, Light tank and Kamikaze were created by Captain Nemo. The US G.I icon was created by Captain Nemo & Alex Mor. B-17, Zero and Mech.Inf. units were created by MHN (???). Submarine unit was created by Steve Strayer.

I modified most of those templates, but I may thank the autors because the original art work is theirs.

The title.gif picture shows the US troops disembarking in Guadalcana. (c) The Bettman Archive.

In versions 1.1 to 1.3, there were no major changes; I've changed any unit templates, and I added the Japanese and US flags. I also added any new events; nothing special, just to give the scenario some "colour". MGE version of Civ2 doesn't allow 3-point objective cities, so I changed the objectives distribution. Now playing with MGE is possible. I also changed the "title.gif" file.
